Walter Ufer (1876-1936) was an American painter and member of the Taos Society of Artists. Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, Ufer received much of his training as an artist in Germany. He moved to Taos in 1914, and in 1920, became the first Taos-based artist to win a prize at the Carnegie International. Ufer was also a well known activist, supporting labor rights as a member of the Industrial Workers of the World. His paintings can be found in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Taos Art Museum, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and more.
